Wedding invitation wording in Bengali

The traditional card in Bengali from the bride's parents, the বৌভাত card from the groom's, and a short message for WhatsApp, reviewed line by line, with an English gloss beneath.

How a Bengali card is worded

A Bengali Hindu wedding card comes from the bride's side: the বিবাহ is hosted by the কন্যাপক্ষ, and the groom's family sends its own card for the বৌভাত, the feast a day or two later, so a bride's card carries no বৌভাত line. The card opens with an invocation, most often শ্রীশ্রীদুর্গা সহায়, শ্রীশ্রীগণেশায় নমঃ or শ্রীশ্রীপ্রজাপতয়ে নমঃ (the doubled শ্রীশ্রী is a Bengali habit), then the heading শুভ বিবাহ, then the elders whose blessing the wedding has, the parents who invite, the bride with কল্যাণীয়া before her name, the groom with কল্যাণীয় before his and his parents named, and the sentence ends অনুষ্ঠিত হইবে, "will be held", in the সাধু register that Bengali cards still keep. Then the day and date, the বঙ্গাব্দ date, the time guests arrive and the শুভলগ্ন as a single moment, the venue after স্থান:, the request to come with the family and bless the couple, and a নিবেদক block naming the parents. Mothers and grandmothers are শ্রীমতী; the bride never is, because শ্রীমতী marks a married woman. A departed elder is স্বর্গীয়. The English gloss under the first sample says what each line does.

Which convention this follows

এই নমুনাগুলি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের (কলকাতা) হিন্দু বাঙালি রীতি অনুসরণ করে তৈরি। বিবাহের কার্ড কন্যাপক্ষের তরফে, আর বৌভাত/প্রীতিভোজের কার্ড বরপক্ষের তরফে দেওয়া হয়। ভাষা প্রধানত সাধু (যেমন "অনুষ্ঠিত হইবে", "আশীর্বাদ করিবেন"); চলিত রূপও নিচে দেওয়া আছে।

What each part of the first sample does, in order:

Small things that matter

• দুই পক্ষের কার্ডেই নামের আগে একই সম্মানসূচক শব্দ ব্যবহার করুন (যেমন শ্রী, শ্রীমতী, কল্যাণীয়/কল্যাণীয়া)। এক কার্ডে "শ্রীমান" আর অন্যটিতে "শ্রী" যেন না হয়।
• সময় লেখার সময় পুরোহিতের দেওয়া শুভলগ্নটি হুবহু বসান। অতিথিদের পৌঁছনোর সময় আর শুভলগ্ন আলাদা করে লিখুন।
• প্রতিটি অনুষ্ঠানের জন্য আলাদা স্থান ও আলাদা লোকেশন লিঙ্ক দিন।
• অতিথিকে "আসবেন কি না" জিজ্ঞাসা করবেন না; কার্ডে তাঁদের উপস্থিতি ও আশীর্বাদ প্রার্থনা করুন। প্রয়োজনে যোগাযোগের একটি নম্বর দিন।
• The samples are in সাধু ভাষা, which Bengali cards still keep. For the spoken চলিত register, swap সহিত for সঙ্গে, অনুষ্ঠিত হইবে for সম্পন্ন হবে, and সপরিবারে উপস্থিত হইয়া ... আশীর্বাদ করিবেন for সপরিবারে উপস্থিত থেকে ... আশীর্বাদ করবেন.
• কল্যাণীয় or শ্রীমান goes before the groom, কল্যাণীয়া or কুমারী before the bride, written out in full; শ্রীমতী marks a married woman and never goes before the bride. Parents are শ্রী and শ্রীমতী (শ্রীযুক্ত and শ্রীযুক্তা on a formal card), a departed elder is স্বর্গীয় or স্ব., and মরহুম belongs only on a Muslim card. সৌভাগ্যকাঙ্ক্ষিণী is not a Bengali card word.
• Bengali numerals (০ to ৯) with the ordinal endings ১লা, ২রা, ৩রা, ৪ঠা, ৭ই, ২০শে. The বঙ্গাব্দ date for Saturday 20 February 2027 is ৭ই ফাল্গুন ১৪৩৩ by the Bangla Academy calendar; the West Bengal সনাতন পঞ্জিকা can differ by a day, so take the date and the লগ্ন from your পুরোহিত. The লগ্ন is a single moment, usually at night, printed apart from the time guests arrive; গোধূলি লগ্ন when it falls at dusk.
• The functions in order, each with its own time and venue where it applies: আশীর্বাদ, আইবুড়োভাত, গায়ে হলুদ, অধিবাস, বিবাহ, বাসি বিয়ে, বৌভাত. The মামা is often named. The card is a নিমন্ত্রণপত্র (আমন্ত্রণ is the general word); the venue is a ভবন, a ম্যারেজ হল, a কমিউনিটি হল, a লজ or the family house, never a কল্যাণ মণ্ডপ, which is South Indian. Brahmin families sometimes print the গোত্র; Kolkata cards often leave it out.

The card that fits

Bandhan carries this wording in Bengali, in the guest's own script, and lets the বিবাহ and the বৌভাত each have their own date, venue and map, whether one family sends the card or both.
