Wedding invitation wording in Kannada
The traditional card in Kannada, from the parents, and a short message for WhatsApp, reviewed line by line, with an English gloss beneath and the opening line chosen by community.
How a Kannada card is worded
A Kannada wedding invitation opens with an invocation chosen by the family's community, then the words for the occasion, ಶುಭ ವಿವಾಹ (or ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವ, especially in the north of the state and among Lingayat families). Then the grandparents whose blessings the wedding has, here with the father named first, though either order is printed, then the parents who invite as a couple, then the groom with ಚಿ. before his name and the bride with ಕು. before hers, each introduced as the son or daughter of their parents. Then the day and date, the auspicious time, which Kannada cards often give as a window, the venue, and the request that the guest come with their family and bless the couple, signed by the inviting family. The English gloss under the first sample says what each line does.
Which convention this follows

Small things that matter
- ವರ ಮತ್ತು ವಧುವಿನ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಮುಂದಿನ ಗೌರವಸೂಚಕಗಳನ್ನು (ಚಿ. / ಕು. / ಚಿ.ಸೌ.ಕಾಂ.) ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ಒಂದೇ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಿ.
- ಶುಭ ಮುಹೂರ್ತವನ್ನು ಪುರೋಹಿತರು ಅಥವಾ ಜೋಯಿಸರು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆಯೇ ಬರೆಯಿರಿ: ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯವಾದರೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಅವಧಿಯಾದರೆ ಅವಧಿಯಾಗಿ ಯಥಾವತ್ತಾಗಿ ನಮೂದಿಸಿ.
- ಪ್ರತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೂ ಅದರದೇ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಸಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ಅದರದೇ ನಕ್ಷೆ (ಮ್ಯಾಪ್) ಲಿಂಕ್ ಕೊಡಿ.
- ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಬೇಡಿ; ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಅವರ ಆಗಮನ ಹಾಗೂ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವನ್ನು ಕೋರುತ್ತದೆ.
- Traditional families add a panchanga line above the date, in this shape: ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿ ಶ್ರೀ [ಸಂವತ್ಸರದ ಹೆಸರು] ನಾಮ ಸಂವತ್ಸರದ [ಉತ್ತರಾಯಣ/ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಯನ], [ಋತು] ಋತು, [ಮಾಸ] ಮಾಸ, [ಪಕ್ಷ] ಪಕ್ಷ, [ತಿಥಿ] ತಿಥಿ, [ವಾರ] ವಾರ, [ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ] ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ, [ಲಗ್ನ] ಲಗ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ. Western digits are the norm on printed cards; Kannada numerals survive mainly on traditional and matha cards. The closing ತಮ್ಮ ಆಗಮನಾಭಿಲಾಷಿಗಳು is a common alternative to ಇಂತಿ ಆಮಂತ್ರಿಸುವವರು.
- ಚಿ॥ಸೌ॥ (ಚಿರಂಜೀವಿ ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯವತಿ) before the bride's name, with ಚಿ॥ರಾ॥ before the groom's, is a traditional Kannada pair, and ಚಿ.ಸೌ.ಕಾಂ. is also seen; ಕು. is the plain modern choice. Any of these is fine, but use one system on both sides.
