Wedding invitation wording in Telugu

The traditional card in Telugu, from both families, and a short message for WhatsApp, reviewed line by line, with an English gloss beneath and the opening line chosen by community.

How a Telugu card is worded

A Telugu wedding card opens with an invocation, most often శ్రీరస్తు శుభమస్తు, which is about as Telugu as an opening gets, or శ్రీ గణేశాయ నమః, or the family deity. The heading is శుభ వివాహం or వివాహ మహోత్సవం; the card itself is called a శుభలేఖ, so that word is not used as the heading, any more than a card would be titled "Invitation". Then the grandparents whose blessing the wedding has, the parents named father first with a dash between them and గార్ల or దంపతుల after, never మరియు, which is an English "and" and does not join a husband and wife. The groom carries చి. (చిరంజీవి) before his name and the bride చి.ల.సౌ. (చిరంజీవి లక్ష్మీ సౌభాగ్యవతి) before hers, and the frame runs "to him, with her": చి. అర్జున్‌కు ... చి.ల.సౌ. మీరతో, with the postpositions attached to the names. Then the panchangam line with the year of the sixty-year cycle, the ayana, the season, the month, the fortnight, the tithi, the weekday and the star, then the date and the muhurtham as a single moment with the లగ్నం, then the venue in the locative, and the sentence ends జరుగును. Telugu names put the house name, the ఇంటిపేరు, before the given name. A departed elder is కీ.శే. (కీర్తిశేషులు). The printed card keeps the older grandhika verbs; the message you send on WhatsApp uses the everyday ones. The English gloss under the first sample says what each line does.

Which convention this follows

Small things that matter

• పెళ్లికొడుకు, పెళ్లికూతురు, ఇద్దరి పేర్ల ముందు వచ్చే గౌరవ సూచకాలను (చి., చి.ల.సౌ. వంటివి) రెండు వైపులా ఒకేలా ఉంచండి.
• పురోహితులు చెప్పిన ముహూర్తాన్ని, లగ్నం, నక్షత్రంతో సహా, ఒక్క నిమిషం తేడా లేకుండా ఉన్నదున్నట్లుగా రాయండి.
• ప్రతి వేడుకకూ దాని స్వంత వేదిక చిరునామా, దాని స్వంత లొకేషన్ లింక్ విడిగా ఇవ్వండి.
• అతిథులు వస్తారా రారా అని అడగవద్దు; వారి రాక కోసం, వారి ఆశీస్సుల కోసం మాత్రమే కోరండి. సంప్రదింపుల కోసం ఇంటివారి ఫోన్ నంబర్లు మాత్రం ఇవ్వవచ్చు.
• The printed card keeps the older grandhika verbs, the way a Marathi card keeps sadhu. For the everyday register, which suits the message beside the link, write లగ్నంలో for లగ్నమున, జరుగుతుంది for జరుగును, and కోరుతున్నాము for కోరుచున్నాము. Keep one register through the whole card.
• మరియు lists things and does not join a husband and wife. The parents take a dash between them and గార్ల or దంపతుల after, and the couple are joined by కు on his name and తో on hers. The suffixes attach: మీరల, హైదరాబాద్‌లో, not a space before them. నందు is the older form of లో and is also right on a formal card.
• A departed elder is కీ.శే. (కీర్తిశేషులు); స్వర్గీయ and దివంగత are also used. Parents are శ్రీ and శ్రీమతి, గారు singular and గార్ల for a couple. చి.ల.సౌ. is చిరంజీవి లక్ష్మీ సౌభాగ్యవతి, still printed everywhere, and some families now write సౌ. or కుమారి or nothing at all; whichever you choose, use one system on both sides.
• The name carries the ఇంటిపేరు, the house name, before the given name. The sample date is Monday 17 May 2027, a real wedding muhurtham in the Plavanga year; the panchangam line for your own date comes from your purohita, and the లగ్నం and the minute here are only an illustration. Telugu cards give one moment, not a window, and use Western digits. The functions in order: నిశ్చితార్థం, పెళ్లికొడుకు and పెళ్లికూతురు with మంగళస్నానం, కాశీయాత్ర, స్నాతకం, then the వివాహం, then the విందు or రిసెప్షన్, then సత్యనారాయణ వ్రతం and గృహప్రవేశం. The reception follows the wedding here, unlike Tamil Nadu, where it is usually the evening before. The venue is a కళ్యాణ మండపం, a ఫంక్షన్ హాల్, a కన్వెన్షన్ or గార్డెన్స్.
